Chief Product Officer

Owns what the product is and what it is for — the bets, the sequence, and the things deliberately not built.

Fractional CPO
Founders & fractional leadership also called VP Product, Head of Product, Chief Product & Technology Officer (merged) Specialist seat
1

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

The seat appears when there is more product than one person can hold in their head: several lines, several teams, and a roadmap that has to be argued about rather than remembered. Before that the founder is the CPO and should stay so. Netflix is the well-known example of the other direction — Elizabeth Stone holds product and technology in one CTO seat — and that merge works wherever the product is the engineering.

Education

Any degree. In a technical or regulated product, enough depth to argue with engineering on the merits is worth more than any qualification.

Experience

10+ years with product ownership through at least one change of strategy. Ask what they killed, when, and what it cost to kill late.

Vertical / domain experience

Domain matters most where the buyer is a profession and the product is their workflow. In consumer and horizontal products, judgment and taste travel better than sector knowledge.

What it pays, roughly

$138,674 median, Canada — for Managers in engineering, architecture, science and information systems, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $130,125 to $149,323 over 127,400 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

2

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
Pragmatic Institute certifications Pragmatic Institute The most widely recognised product vocabulary in B2B. A grounding, not a qualification for the seat.
CSPO — Certified Scrum Product Owner Scrum Alliance Process literacy. Two days; it does not make a product executive.
3

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

The founder. Nothing about this is delegable while you are still finding out who the buyer is.

2Seed
first money, first hires

Still the founder, with the first product manager hired underneath the decisions rather than over them.

3Series A
a real org chart

A real seat once there are three or more product areas, or a product the company is betting the next round on.

4

Who it sits beside

A specialist seat is defined as much by the seats around it as by its own work — which hat it reports through, which one asks the adjacent question, and which one it must stay independent of.

Sits level with the Chief Experience Officer and shares the same goal from two sides: the CPO decides what the product does, the CXO decides what using it feels like. Where the product is the engineering — infrastructure, platforms, developer tools — the CPO and CTO are usually one person, and that is a deliberate structure rather than a gap.

5

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

CPO and CEO in one is the normal founder arrangement and holds until the roadmap outgrows the calendar. CPO plus CTO is the Netflix-style merge: correct when the hard problems are technical, wrong when the hard problems are the buyer.

Keep separate from

Do not merge product with the number. A product leader carrying this quarter’s pipeline will build what closes this quarter.

6

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Can state what the product is not for
  • Shows a roadmap with bets and the evidence behind them
  • Has killed something they championed

Red flags

  • Roadmap is a feature list with dates
  • Cannot describe the buyer without marketing’s deck
  • Confuses shipping with outcome

What this role runs on

The software categories this seat lives in, each linked to the screen of who sells it — the incumbent, the challengers and what the lock-in is.
