Chief Experience Officer

Owns what using the company feels like end to end — the journey, the interface, the brand’s touchpoints, the moments that decide whether someone comes back.

Fractional CXO
Founders & fractional leadership also called Chief Customer Officer, Head of Customer Experience, VP Experience Design Specialist seat
1

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

Worth a seat when the experience is the differentiator rather than the feature list, and when the journey crosses teams that do not talk: marketing sends them, product serves them, support rescues them. The CXO is accountable for the seam.

Education

Design, research, service design or marketing. The portfolio and the research practice decide it, not the degree.

Experience

8+ years spanning at least two of design, research and customer operations. Ask for a journey they measured before and after.

Vertical / domain experience

Matters in regulated and accessibility-sensitive products, and anywhere the customer is doing something stressful — health, money, moving house, a dispute.

What it pays, roughly

$119,995 median, Canada — for Administrative services managers, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $104,000 to $123,718 over 192,795 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

2

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
CCXP — Certified Customer Experience Professional Customer Experience Professionals Association The only broadly recognised credential in customer experience.
CPACC / WAS — accessibility credentials International Association of Accessibility Professionals Concrete, and required in substance if you sell to the public sector.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

The founder, by answering the support queue personally.

2Seed
first money, first hires

A product designer who also does research. The experience is one person’s taste at this stage, and that is fine.

3Series A
a real org chart

A seat with authority across product, marketing and support — otherwise it is a design manager with a grander title.

4

Who it sits beside

A specialist seat is defined as much by the seats around it as by its own work — which hat it reports through, which one asks the adjacent question, and which one it must stay independent of.

Equal rank with the Chief Product Officer and pointed at the same outcome: what the product does, and what it feels like to use. Where they split from marketing is horizon — the CMO owns the promise made to the market, the CXO owns whether the product keeps it.

5

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

CXO and CPO merge cleanly in a company under about fifty people, and the merged seat is usually titled CPO. Keep the research function inside it either way.

Keep separate from

No governance conflict. The practical risk is a CXO with no authority over the systems that shape the journey — then it is advice, not ownership.

6

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Maps the journey including the parts the company does not own
  • Measures something before redesigning it
  • Talks to customers weekly without being asked

Red flags

  • Brand refresh as the first act
  • Treats research as a report rather than a habit
  • No view on accessibility
