Financial Controller

Owns the books end to end: the close, the controls, the statements, and whether the numbers the board sees are right.

Finance also called Controller, Financial Reporting Manager, Head of Accounting, Chief Accounting Officer (at scale)

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

The seat between a bookkeeper and a CFO, and the one most companies need before they think they do. A bookkeeper records what happened; a CFO decides what to do about it; the controller is the person who makes sure what was recorded is actually what happened. Hire when the monthly close takes longer than it should, when an audit is coming, or when the CFO is spending their time on reconciliations instead of on the raise.

Education

An accounting designation, in practice. This is a technical seat and the qualification is the credential.

Experience

6+ years including closes they have owned and at least one audit from the company side. Ask how long their close takes, what the longest step is, and what they changed about it last year.

Vertical / domain experience

Revenue recognition and inventory are where domain bites: SaaS, construction percentage-of-completion, lending, insurance and anything holding deposits each have their own treatment. Multi-entity and multi-currency experience matters more than industry.

What it pays, roughly

$83,949 median, Canada — for Auditors, accountants and investment professionals, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $75,005 to $90,002 over 391,235 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
CPA — Chartered Professional Accountant CPA Canada The Canadian designation, and effectively the entry requirement for this seat.
CPA (United States) AICPA & state boards US equivalent; licensed by state board.
CMA — Certified Management Accountant IMA Management-accounting weighted; a good fit where the role leans toward costing and analysis.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

A bookkeeper and a year-end accountant. The founder still reads the bank statement line by line.

2Seed
first money, first hires

A fractional controller, often a day a week, to set the close calendar and the chart of accounts properly before there is a mess to unwind.

3Series A
a real org chart

Full time, owning the close, the controls, the audit and the board reporting pack — which is what frees a CFO to do the CFO job.

4

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

Controller and CFO are one person below Series A and should separate when the audit arrives — the CFO sets policy and talks to the board, the controller applies it and closes the books. Controller and technical accounting merge comfortably; controller and bookkeeper should not, because the point of the seat is review.

Keep separate from

Whoever records a transaction should not also be the person who releases the money for it. That separation is the single control an auditor checks first, and it is cheap to keep.

5

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Has shortened a close and can say how
  • Reconciles everything, including the awkward accounts
  • Writes the judgment memo at the time, not at audit

Red flags

  • Close takes three weeks and always has
  • No documented controls
  • Treats the auditor as the policy setter
