Manager, Technical Accounting and Reporting

Decides how a transaction is recorded and defends it — revenue recognition, equity, leases, acquisitions — and produces statements that survive an audit.

1

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

A post-Series-A hire in most companies and an early one in any business with complicated revenue. The trigger is a question your bookkeeper cannot answer: when do we recognise this, and who says so.

Education

An accounting designation, effectively required. This is the one finance role where the credential is the qualification.

Experience

5+ years with audit-firm training (a Big Four or strong mid-tier background) plus industry time. Ask which standard they have had to apply where the answer was genuinely unclear, and what they concluded.

Vertical / domain experience

Standard-specific rather than industry-specific: IFRS 15 / ASC 606 revenue, IFRS 16 leases, share-based payment, business combinations. SaaS, construction, lending and insurance each have characteristic traps.

What it pays, roughly

$83,949 median, Canada — for Auditors, accountants and investment professionals, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $75,005 to $90,002 over 391,235 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

2

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

CPA (United States) AICPA & state boards US equivalent, licensed by state board.
ACA / ACCA ICAEW / ACCA UK and international designations, common in IFRS environments.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

A bookkeeper and an accountant at year-end. Decide your revenue recognition policy before the first invoice, not after the first audit.

2Seed
first money, first hires

Fractional controller or the CFO. Get the policy written down and applied consistently — restating two years of revenue is a real cost in diligence.

3Series A
a real org chart

A dedicated owner, the first audit, and a reporting pack produced on a monthly calendar rather than on request.

4

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

Technical accounting and the controller role are usually one person below Series B. Keep them separate from whoever processes transactions once an audit is in scope.

Keep separate from

The person who sets the policy should not be the only person who applies it to the hardest cases; that is what the auditor is for.

5

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Cites the standard and the paragraph, then explains it in plain language
  • Documents judgments at the time, not at audit
  • Has disagreed with an auditor and held the position

Red flags

  • Treats the auditor as the policy setter
  • No written memos for judgment calls
  • Only bookkeeping experience
