Chief Sustainability Officer

Owns the company’s environmental and social footprint and, increasingly, the disclosures it is legally obliged to publish about it.

Fractional CSO
Founders & fractional leadership also called Head of Sustainability, ESG Lead, Chief ESG Officer Specialist seat
The initials are shared

CSO is shared with Chief Security Officer. Sustainability has the better claim to the initials in common usage, which is exactly why the security seat is written as CISO.

1

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

Driven by three forces, in order of how hard they push: a disclosure regime that applies to you, a large customer whose procurement asks for your data, and an investor who wants it. In a small company it is a project with an owner rather than a seat; it becomes a seat when the reporting is assured and the answers have to withstand an auditor.

Education

Environmental science, engineering, accounting or policy. The accounting half matters more than people expect — assured sustainability reporting is an accounting exercise with a scientific subject.

Experience

7+ years including one reporting cycle produced end to end and, ideally, one assured. Ask where their Scope 3 numbers came from and how confident they are in each.

Vertical / domain experience

Sector decides the material topics entirely: emissions for industry and transport, water for food and beverage, labour and supply chain for apparel and electronics.

What it pays, roughly

$93,600 median, Canada — for Public and environmental health and safety professionals, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures over 19,395 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

2

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
GRI Standards Global Reporting Initiative The most widely used sustainability reporting standard; a working knowledge is the baseline.
IFRS S1 and S2 — ISSB standards International Sustainability Standards Board Where mandatory climate and sustainability disclosure is converging.
CPA, where the reporting is assured CPA Canada / AICPA Assurance-grade reporting is an accounting discipline; many of these seats are held by accountants.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

Nobody. Know your energy and waste bills, and keep the invoices.

2Seed
first money, first hires

A project with an owner, triggered by a customer questionnaire more often than by conviction.

3Series A
a real org chart

A seat where disclosure is mandatory for you, or where a major customer makes your data a condition of supply.

4

Who it sits beside

A specialist seat is defined as much by the seats around it as by its own work — which hat it reports through, which one asks the adjacent question, and which one it must stay independent of.

Reports to finance in most companies that take it seriously, because the output is an assured disclosure. Works through operations, which owns the processes that actually produce the footprint.

5

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

Merges with finance where the driver is disclosure, and with operations where the driver is cost and energy. Both are legitimate; name which one you are doing.

Keep separate from

No structural conflict. The failure mode is a seat with a communications budget and no authority over operations — that produces a report, not a reduction.

6

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Knows which standard applies to you and why
  • Can trace a number to a meter or an invoice
  • Distinguishes what is measured from what is estimated

Red flags

  • Leads with a pledge and a target year
  • No view on data quality
  • Treats the report as the outcome
