IT Support Technician / Help Desk Analyst
The person staff actually go to: accounts, devices, access, the thing that stopped working ten minutes before a meeting.
Who to hire
The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.
The entry point into IT and an underrated hire. Every hour an engineer spends resetting someone’s access is an hour of expensive time spent badly. Hire for temperament first — this role is customer service with a technical subject — and expect it to be a career start, with the good ones moving into systems administration or security within two years.
Education
No requirement. CompTIA A+ or equivalent is the usual starting credential and signals seriousness.
Experience
0–3 years. Ask how they would explain a password reset to someone who is angry and late. Patience is the skill being tested.
Vertical / domain experience
Environment matters more than industry: a Mac-first startup and a Windows-and-Active-Directory estate are different jobs.
What it pays, roughly
$72,800 median, Canada — for Technical occupations in computer and information systems, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $65,458 to $74,880 over 134,170 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.
Credentials and certifications
What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.
| Credential | Issued by | When it matters | Skiploma |
|---|---|---|---|
| CompTIA A+ | CompTIA | The standard entry credential for IT support, and a real signal at this level. | — |
| Microsoft 365 fundamentals | Microsoft | Relevant to most estates and quick to obtain. | — |
| ITIL 4 Foundation | PeopleCert | The vocabulary of service desks; useful once there is a ticket queue. | — |
What this role does at each stage
The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.
Nobody. The founder is the help desk.
Nobody internally — a managed service provider is cheaper than a person until about twenty-five staff.
A first support hire at around thirty to fifty staff, usually reporting to the systems administrator.
Can one person hold this and something else?
The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.
Merges well with
- IT Systems Administrator / Sysadmin
- Experience Specialist (Operations)
- Chief Information Officer (Founders & fractional leadership)
Support and systems administration are one role until the ticket volume justifies two. Support and customer support should not merge, despite the similar skills.
Keep separate from
No conflict, but a support technician with permanent administrator rights is the most common quiet security gap in a small company.
Reading a candidate
What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.
Good signals
- Calm with someone who is not
- Writes the fix down so the next person finds it
- Asks for the access they need, not all of it
Red flags
- Fixes without recording
- Dismissive of non-technical colleagues
- Treats the queue as the goal
The same role in three kinds of company
This job changes shape depending on who is paying for it. An agency sells the hours, a contract shop delivers into someone else's estate, and a product company is building something it keeps — and the same title means something different in each.
In an agency
In an agency, support is often also client-facing technical support, which is a different and more senior job. Do not conflate them in one posting.
On a client contract
On contract, your staff will need support on the client’s systems, which your help desk cannot see. Agree the escalation path up front.
In a product company
In a product company, keep internal IT support separate from customer support — the skills look alike and the audiences are not.
