DevOps Engineer / DevOps Specialist
Owns how code gets from a laptop to production and what happens to it there: the pipeline, the infrastructure, the monitoring, the 3am page.
Who to hire
The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.
The hire that stops engineers spending a third of their week on deployment. Three overlapping names: DevOps is the practice, Platform Engineering is the same work organised as an internal product, and Site Reliability Engineering is Google’s version with error budgets attached. Treat them as one hire at your size.
Education
No requirement, and this field is unusually full of people who came in sideways from systems administration. Judge the pipeline they built and whether anyone else could run it.
Experience
4+ years, with infrastructure someone else inherited successfully. Ask what they automated last and what it used to cost.
Vertical / domain experience
Cloud platform is the real domain. AWS, Azure and GCP depth is not interchangeable, and regulated hosting — data residency, government cloud — is its own skill.
What it pays, roughly
$95,992 median, Canada — for Computer and information systems professionals, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $85,010 to $103,002 over 202,605 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.
Credentials and certifications
What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

| A note on the word “engineer” in Canada | Engineers Canada and the twelve provincial and territorial regulators | In a joint statement of July 2022 the regulators restated that “software engineer”, “computer engineer” and related IT titles prefixed with engineer may not be used by anyone not licensed as an engineer — in job titles, postings, résumés, websites or social media. APEGA obtained a court injunction against unlicensed use in 2019 and later pursued a software company over its postings. Alberta tabled Bill 7 in November 2023 proposing an exemption for the title; whether it is in force is not established here, so check your own province before writing it on a posting. This is why Canadian job ads so often say Developer. | — |
| Cloud platform professional certifications | AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure | The strongest signal in this discipline, and often a partner requirement for the company itself. | — |
| CKA / CKAD — Kubernetes administrator and application developer | Cloud Native Computing Foundation / Linux Foundation | Hands-on and examined under time pressure — one of the more honest certifications in tech. | Study |
| RHCSA / RHCE — Red Hat Linux administration | Red Hat | Practical Linux depth; performance-based rather than multiple choice. | Study |
What this role does at each stage
The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.
The founder deploys by hand and it is fine. Keep a written runbook from the first deploy.
Part of a backend engineer’s job. The three things to put in early: version control discipline, an automated deploy, and a restore you have actually tested.
A seat once there are five or more engineers or anything with uptime obligations.
Can one person hold this and something else?
The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.
Merges well with
- Backend Engineer / Back-End Developer
- IT Systems Administrator / Sysadmin
- Security Engineer / Information Security Analyst
- Chief Technology Officer (Founders & fractional leadership)
DevOps and backend merge at small scale, and DevOps and systems administration merge where the company has both cloud and offices. The three are one person in most companies under twenty people.
Keep separate from
No structural conflict. The real risk is a single person holding all the production credentials with no documented second pair of hands.
Reading a candidate
What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.
Good signals
- Can describe a rollback they performed
- Automates the thing they were asked to do twice
- Has restored from a backup, not just taken one
Red flags
- Hand-built servers nobody can reproduce
- No monitoring beyond "is it up"
- Tooling enthusiasm with no delivery behind it
The same role in three kinds of company
This job changes shape depending on who is paying for it. An agency sells the hours, a contract shop delivers into someone else's estate, and a product company is building something it keeps — and the same title means something different in each.
In an agency
Agencies need repeatable environments above all: the same deployment for twenty client projects, or every handover becomes bespoke.
On a client contract
On contract, infrastructure-as-code is the deliverable that makes a handover possible. A client who cannot rebuild the environment does not own the system.
In a product company
In a product company this role is the difference between shipping daily and shipping monthly, and it compounds.
