Chief Information Security Officer

Owns the security of what the company holds: the controls, the evidence, the incident when it comes.

Fractional CISO
Founders & fractional leadership also called Chief Security Officer, Head of Security, VP Information Security Specialist seat
The initials are shared

CSO is ambiguous: it means Chief Security Officer in one company and Chief Sustainability Officer in another. CISO is unambiguous, which is why it is the title used here.

1

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

The first real trigger is commercial, not technical — an enterprise customer sends a security questionnaire, or an auditor asks for a control framework. The second is sectoral: if you are a cybersecurity, IT services or infrastructure business, this seat exists from early on because it is also the product. Software and product-led companies more often give the ground to the CIO until a certification forces the split.

Education

Computer science, information systems or an audit background. For the certification path, audit literacy matters as much as technical depth.

Experience

8+ years in security, including one incident run end to end and one framework certified. Ask about the incident: what the first hour looked like, and who they told.

Vertical / domain experience

Regulatory and sectoral domain is decisive — SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, PCI DSS and critical-infrastructure regimes all differ in what evidence they will accept.

What it pays, roughly

$138,674 median, Canada — for Managers in engineering, architecture, science and information systems, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $130,125 to $149,323 over 127,400 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

2

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
CISSP — Certified Information Systems Security Professional ISC2 The default senior credential; expected on a CISO CV.
CISM — Certified Information Security Manager ISACA Management-weighted rather than technical; a good fit for the seat itself.
GIAC certifications GIAC Hands-on and specific; stronger evidence for the team than for the chief.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

Nobody. A password manager, two-factor on everything, and backups you have restored from once.

2Seed
first money, first hires

Fractional, a day or two a month, usually to get through a customer questionnaire or a first certification without rebuilding the company around it.

3Series A
a real org chart

A seat once you hold customer data at scale, sell to enterprises, or operate anything a regulator considers critical.

4

Who it sits beside

A specialist seat is defined as much by the seats around it as by its own work — which hat it reports through, which one asks the adjacent question, and which one it must stay independent of.

Overlaps the CIO on systems and access, and the CTO on how the product is built. The split that works: the CIO runs the estate, the CISO sets and proves the controls over it — and the CISO should not report to the person whose systems they audit.

5

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

CISO and CIO merge in a small company and must separate the moment the certification is real, because self-certification is not certification.

Keep separate from

Once there is an audited framework, the person running the systems should not be the only person attesting that they are secure.

6

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Asks what you hold and where before proposing anything
  • Has run an incident and will describe the mistakes
  • Talks about evidence, not tools

Red flags

  • Leads with a product purchase
  • No incident response plan
  • Treats the questionnaire as the goal rather than the control
