Chief AI Officer

Owns where the company uses AI, what it is allowed to touch, and who answers when it is wrong.

Founders & fractional leadership also called Head of AI, Chief Analytics Officer (the seat it is displacing), Head of Digital Transformation Specialist seat

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

Emerging and still uncommon, and the honest reason to create it is organisational rather than technical: AI changes processes across every department at once, and nobody below the executive layer can sequence that. It is increasingly taking the ground a Chief Analytics Officer used to hold, because the questions have moved from "what do the numbers say" to "what should be automated, and what must stay human". Treat it as a transformation seat with a technical floor, not a research role.

Education

Technical enough to tell a demonstration from a system. Beyond that, change management is the larger half of the job.

Experience

8+ years delivering systems into production, with at least one automation that changed how people worked — including the part where they resisted it.

Vertical / domain experience

Domain decides the risk: a wrong answer in marketing copy is an embarrassment, and in clinical triage, lending or hiring it is a regulated event. Hire for the consequence profile you actually have.

What it pays, roughly

$138,674 median, Canada — for Managers in engineering, architecture, science and information systems, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $130,125 to $149,323 over 127,400 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

CredentialIssued byWhen it matters
ISO/IEC 42001 — AI management systems International Organization for Standardization The first management-system standard for AI. Useful as the framework to run the function against.
NIST AI Risk Management Framework US National Institute of Standards and Technology Free, practical, and what a cautious enterprise buyer will ask whether you follow.
Cloud and ML platform certifications AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Evidence of platform breadth; no substitute for having shipped.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

Nobody. The founder uses the tools and notices where they help.

2Seed
first money, first hires

Not a seat. One engineer with a mandate and a short list of processes worth automating.

3Series A
a real org chart

A seat where AI changes the product or the cost base materially, and where someone has to own the policy on what it may decide alone.

4

Who it sits beside

A specialist seat is defined as much by the seats around it as by its own work — which hat it reports through, which one asks the adjacent question, and which one it must stay independent of.

Sits between technology and data: the CTO builds, the CDO governs the inputs, the CAIO decides what is automated and holds the line on what is not. In most companies under a few hundred people this is one of the other two wearing a third hat.

5

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

Merges naturally with the CTO in a product company and with the COO in an operating one, because the gains are in process rather than in the model.

Keep separate from

No structural conflict, but the person accountable for AI adoption should not also be the only person reviewing its failures.

6

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Starts with a process and its cost, not a model
  • Can say what should not be automated
  • Has measured an automation after it shipped

Red flags

  • Pilot projects with no owner
  • Cannot explain a failure mode
  • Buys capability before defining the policy

What this role runs on

The software categories this seat lives in, each linked to the screen of who sells it — the incumbent, the challengers and what the lock-in is.
